Who are we?

We are Dulwich Women’s Institute and we are the second WI to be based in East Dulwich, London SE22. We were founded in January 2018, by Sue Jarvie (our current President), as a result of her trying to join the existing East Dulwich WI, only to be told that there was a 5 year waiting list!) We come under the umbrella of the London District of West Kent Federation of WIs. www.thewi.org.uk/westkent

We are a diverse, fun loving, welcoming group of ladies. At present we have 90+ members and we are looking for more like minded ladies to come and join our merry band.

We try really hard to embrace and celebrate all the things the WI stands for and to embody the WI’s motto of ‘Inspiring Women’ by making new friends, supporting one another, learning new skills and, hopefully, awakening interests that will benefit, not only our members, but the communities we live in and share – not forgetting to eat lots of cake along the way!

When and where do we meet?

We meet on the second Monday of every month.  In August we hold our annual barbecue, and at Christmas we have a Christmas Party.  Our new venue is the Dulwich Hamlets Football Club – Edgar Kail Way, London, SE22 8BD.

That’s on Dog Kennel Hill right by Sainsbury’s.

Phone no. 020 7274 8707

Our meetings run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and the doors open at 7.00pm. Most ladies start arriving just after 7pm to get a drink, some nibbles and get comfy before the meeting starts. We always have a committee member at the door to ‘meet and greet’ everyone, and she will be happy to answer any questions you might have as well as telling you where all the important stuff is, like the loo (very important info for some of us!), the bar and ‘cosy’ area – this is a seating area set aside for ladies who still want to come along, socialise and have some ‘me’ time but don’t fancy attending that evening’s event

What do we do at meetings?

Our events are really diverse and varied. So far we’ve learnt how to style our wardrobe, make fantastically boozy summer cocktails, worked off the calories doing chair Pilates, learnt how to have a healthy gut with pickled cabbage and laughed out loud as a wonderful 95 year old pensioner entertained us with her stories of being a code breaker in World War II (who knew code breaking could be so racy!)

We’ve made Christmas baubles and wine glass charms, we’ve learnt how to pair chocolate with wine. In between all of the above we’ve had our general knowledge tested on a quiz night and relaxed on a balmy August night at the WI’s summer barbecue.

Can I join?

We are in the very fortunate position of holding our meeting in a large venue, this means that we can cap our membership at 130 ladies.

At the moment we still have membership places available – yay! – but every month our numbers are swelling so if you are interested in joining please don’t hesitate! You are more than welcome to join us for 3 meetings as a guest to see if we are the right WI for you! The price of admission as a guest is £5.00 per meeting plus any other ancillary costs i.e. if we have a ‘make’ntake’ there is normally a small charge for materials.

For membership queries, please email the Membership Secretary at membership@dulwichwi.com

Annual membership will be £43 for 2020 (pro-rata for new members joining later in the year). Cheques should be made payable to Dulwich WI – if you would like to pay by bank transfer, please ask for details.
